A brief history of UDC
The Ugly Duckling Company is a registered Charity, founded in 1997 by Paul Griffiths.
In October 2017, after an incredibly quick illness, Paul passed away. It was a complete shock to all who knew him.
When he first became ill he commented that it couldn’t have happened at a worse time. The charity that he began in 1997 was at a point of expansion and the opportunities that were being presented were exciting; everything he had been working towards was being realised, both here in the UK and further afield.
Paul had a brilliant mind, he was an author, an entrepreneur, innovator and creator, He was passionate, determined, insightful, an excellent communicator; all wrapped up in his Welsh charm and sense of humour.
He committed the last two decades of his life to exploring how to stimulate meaningful conversations with people. People with no faith, some faith, or on a journey of faith. His passion was to create space for people to explore the big and not so big questions of life, to articulate their thoughts and to engage with others.
Spending time to understand the context and the shifts in contemporary culture, he created a suite of resources: Puzzling Questions, Table Talk, The Happiness Lab and Resolve.
For Paul, there was no greater friend than Jesus and he was in the business of introducing Him to anyone interested.
His unexpected death left a huge hole in the UDC family, but our trustees and staff share his passion and, based on the legacy he founded, will continue to enhance and expand the work that he started.
